Teams are formed based on a number of factors including number of registrations, volunteer coaches available, and number of field players at the division. We are a volunteer organization, so we need coaches at all levels from season to season. In past seasons, we have had multiple teams at the younger levels and usually 1-2 teams at the higher levels. Our goal is to make teams a reasonable size to maximize playing time.
Practices will start late March to early April one to two times a week depending on level and volunteer coach. Typically younger teams, U6-8 practice once a week, and U10-14 practice twice a week. Practices can run from 1-1 1/2hours. All practices are located at the Smith Road fields in Manhattan.
Games begin in early to mid- April and go until late May/early June based on scheduling by the league. Eight to nine games are played on Saturdays in the morning with a possible early afternoon game. We try to schedule as many games at home as possible, but we do travel. Travel for games is to neighboring towns such as Wilmington, Coal City, Braidwood, Elwood, and possibly Ottawa on occasion. We aim to have teams travel to the same location for families with siblings, but we cannot make guarantees.
The Lil’ Mavs program runs a bit different. This program is geared towards learning basic skills at a developmentally appropriate level in a group environment. They practice twice a week and do not play Saturday games. They do not need the uniform kit. A Lil’ Mavs t-shirt is covered in the registration fee. This is a great introduction to soccer!
Many people who we’ve come in contact with have had various thoughts on who The MYAA is and what we are about. Hopefully this will help you to understand a little bit more about the organization.
The ‘Who is the MYAA’ is pretty easy. The MYAA is a non-profit 501(c)(3) charitable organization that was established in October of 1999. We were founded by a group of community parents to ensure that our kids would have the ability to play sports and to help maintain and build fields. We provide a place for kids aged 3-14 to learn and fall in love with the game of soccer.
